Electricity rates by state.

Every calculator on this site depends on the electricity price behind it — what it costs to charge a battery, and what a time-of-use rate spread is actually worth. See the live residential electricity rate we use for your state, straight from the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

Data & assumptions

Electricity source:—
Sector: Residential
Rate basis: Flat blended average — not time-of-use
Updated:—
This is a flat average, not your time-of-use rate. If your utility offers a time-of-use plan, the actual value of charging a battery off-peak and discharging it on-peak can be much larger than this blended state average suggests. The TOU Battery Savings Calculator (architecture) will model that spread directly once built.

Utilities in your area

Common electric utilities serving Illinois

This list covers the most common investor-owned and municipal utilities by state and is not exhaustive — rural cooperatives, municipal utilities, and community choice aggregators may also serve your specific address. Your actual rate plan (time-of-use, tiered, demand charges) can differ meaningfully from the state residential average shown above. Check a recent bill for your exact rate, and check the Incentives page for whether your utility runs a battery VPP program.

Electricity prices are U.S. EIA state-level residential monthly averages (EIA Retail Sales API) and represent blended averages across all rate structures and utilities in a state — actual bills, and actual time-of-use spreads, vary by utility, plan, season, and usage tier. See the methodology page for details and full citations.
